Reading & Writing Week

Reading and Writing week write up

Reading and Writing week got off to a great start with a whole-school assembly, introducing a range of interesting and beautifully illustrated picture books, which were used in the classrooms as the focus for the week. The children were suitably excited to delve into their year group’s book and start drafting, writing and publishing their own narratives based around the strange yet beautiful storylines.

Throughout the week, a number of fun Reading-for-Pleasure activities took place, generating a buzz around reading and developing even further our strong reading community. Each class had a number of visitors appear to read aloud to them at the end of the day as part of the daily ‘mystery reader’ event, including staff members, family and friends. Another opportunity to promote Reading-for-Pleasure as part of an interactive event, which took place was daily, ‘book-blether’, giving children and adults to have a chance to discuss their recent reads, recommendations and book reviews. Every day, ‘D.E.A.R. time’ took place too; each day a bell would ring at random, which meant everybody had to Drop Everything they were doing, And Read! Everyone loved the magic and excitement of the D.E.A.R. bell, even the teachers because it meant they too had an opportunity to read and relax from the busyness of the day! And not forgetting World Book day, which was so much fun! Children and teachers arrived as various book-themed characters, and were able to show their costumes off on the World Book Day catwalk. So a HUGE well done and THANK YOU to all the parents/carers who supported their children with making the costumes. They looked marvelous!

At the end of the week, each year group presented their work to the rest of the school in the Reading and Writing Celebration Assembly. Children shared examples of their work by reading aloud snippets to the rest of the school. The children should be super proud of themselves for their efforts and hard work in their writing and if you are ever in the school library, do take a look at the Reading and Writing Week display, which celebrates the writing and art work completed through RW week. The entire week was very well received by the staff, children and the visitors to the school and we look forward to next year’s!
