Enhanced Resource Base – ‘The Aviary’
What is an Enhanced Resource Base?
An Enhanced Resource Base (ERB) is a specialist, dedicated learning space inside a mainstream school designed to support children with specific educational needs and disabilities. At The Grove, our ERB (known as The Aviary) is a base designed to support children with Autism, specifically those with complex communication and interaction difficulties.
What are the benefits of an Enhanced Resource Base?
Children who attend The Aviary are very much part of The Grove – they are able to access whole-school events, lessons and interact with other pupils and staff around the school, dependent on their own individual needs. In addition, children have access to their own area of the school with a dedicated learning space, outside area, bathroom, kitchen and sensory area. They receive a highly personalised learning curriculum based on their individual needs. There is also access to external agencies, such as Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Health.
What is the criteria for children attending The Aviary?
It is expected that children who attend The Aviary will have an Education Health and Care Plan (known as an EHCP) that has Autism identified as their primary area of need. Discussions with professionals, family and other evidence such as reports will support a child’s application to The Aviary.
How are children taught in The Aviary?
The Aviary operates on a two-tier approach that is further tailored to the individual needs of the child. We refer to the tiers as ‘pathways.'
- Explore pathway – this is a play-based, sensory-rich curriculum that is designed to promote communication, curiosity and engagement. There is a strong focus on emotional literacy, social interaction and independence.
- Adventure pathway – this combines thematic and subject specific learning linked to the National Curriculum, taught through therapeutic and nurturing principles. The child may begin to access the mainstream classroom for small periods depending on their strengths and interests.
On top of this, each child will receive bespoke teaching sessions and interventions based on their EHCP outcomes. They will learn skills of self-regulation, language skills and social interactions.
How do I apply for a place?
