What do school governors do?

THE GOVERNING BODY HAS THE FOLLOWING CORE STRATEGIC FUNCTIONS:

Establishing the strategic direction, by:

  • Ensuring the clarity of the vision ethos and strategic direction
  • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
  • Meeting statutory duties

Ensuring accountability, by:

  • Appointing the headteacher
  • Monitoring progress towards targets
  • Performance managing the headteacher
  • Engaging with stakeholders
  • Contributing to school self-evaluation
  • Holding the headteacher and senior leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and it pupils and the efficient reflective performance management of staff

Ensuring financial probity, by:

  • Setting the budget
  • Monitoring spending against the budget
  • Ensuring value for money is obtained
  • Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Governors are volunteers who support the School by working as a group called the Governing Body.  It is the Governing Body’s job to help raise the standards of the school by checking to see if the school’s targets are being met.  The Governors have developed a relationship with the head teacher and staff so that we can support them through problems, celebrate achievements and challenge them when we think they could be doing better.

The Governing Body meets once every half-term and minutes are taken by the Clerk, Helen Andrews.  These minutes are available to parents and school staff. Small groups of Governors meet separately to oversee important aspects of the running of the school such as the finances and the curriculum.  These committees report back to the Governing Body.

We visit the school from time to time during the day to see the curriculum in action.
